I'M HOME OHMYGAWD I'M HOME. I HAVE NEVER BEEN HAPPIER TO BE HOME. It's still not real yet. It feels to all of us (my mom, sister and me) that we're wandering some virtual reality.
After we got off the Turnpike us three Canadian hicks went to Taco Bell. Sitting in Taco Bell, eating decidedly Un-Canadian, greasy, deep-fried fast food was such a culture shock. ("Woooooow! Look at all the people!") I was stuffing gordita supreme into my face with one hand and nachos bel grande in with the other when "Build me up, Buttercup" came on. I squealed and, around huge bites of Americanized Fast Food Mexican (Un-Canadian) Goodness, sang aloud. I told my mom, "I hate this song with a passion" (8th grade talent show OHMYGAWD) "but I've never been happier to hear it!" Then Sarah Mclachlan's "Fallen" came on (we'll ignore the fact that she's CANADIAN from NOVA SCOTIA for right now) and my sister and I howled with excitement and sang along while we got odd glances from everyone who sat around us.
In the car on the way home from Taco Bell we had the windows down and our heads hanging out hooting and hollering. "NO NO NO NO! NO, REDLIGHT, NO! TURN, LIGHT, TURN! WOOOOOOHOOOOOO GREEN LIGHT! WOOOOH!" I'm re-learning how to become an obnoxious American.
Of course my cat isn't speaking to me. She ran up to my mother's arms and let my sister pat her, but I'm the BAD KITTEN RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS GOING AWAY AND LEAVING THING. Aye, my heart. As soon as she starts to forgive me I'm off to college. Even the CAT blames me! UGH.
Two words about Canada before I continue to rejoice in my being-home-ness: 1) The past three weeks (!!!) in Nova Scotia seem to be an entirely different reality, totally independent of the reality and existence in the US on either side of it. 2) The only that that felt real and normal about this trip was leaving it.
I'm going to -- the phone just rang and I leaped to pick it up. "REBECCA! IT'S A PHONE CALL FOR YOU! ON OUR PHONE!"-- go spend A JILLION HOURS IN A MALL AND MOVIE THEATRE AND OHEMGEE.
Who wants to go out and be an obnoxious American with me?! (Like, you know, pre-emptive strikes, government corruption, the whole nine yards. Let's go beat on some third world countries, man!)
